Elden Ring Nightreignhas been something of an unconventional win for developer FromSoftware. By reusing a lot of assets from its 2022 GOTYElden Ring, the studio most known for single-player RPGs created a unique blend of Soulslike, Battle Royale, and Roguelike mechanics that has been a big hit with hundreds of thousands of players. Few developers could have pulled off such a stark departure from the norm, butNightreignhas proven thatFromSoftwareis not a one-trick pony.
Following up on its release, the developer has rolled out several small patches to bring quality of life changes and expand upon the game’s replayability, most notably in the Everdark Sovereign bosses. But one question still remains since players first got their hands on the game, and why FromSoftware is holding out on an easy way to add loads of content toElden Ring Nightreignis the elephant in the room.
When Will Elden Ring Nightreign Add More Shadow of the Erdtree Content?
It’s quite remarkable whatNightreignhas been able to accomplish through reworking the base game ofElden Ring, but one of the most glaring aspects to be missing is any content from Shadow of the Erdtree.Elden Ring’s first and only DLC was released last year and was so big that many fans called it a whole game by itself.Shadow of the Erdtree was even a 2024 GOTY contender, a nomination that caused quite a lot of discussion within the gaming community. Arguably larger than some of FromSoftware’s past standalone games, SOTE expanded onElden Ring’s huge roster of beautiful locations, wild weaponry, and iconic bosses. It seems quite odd that all of this content is absent from Nightreign; afterall, it has been a year since the DLC was released.

Except, it isn’t all absent. In one of the strangest moves by FromSoftware,Nightreigndoes not feature any DLC content beyond the Golden Hippopotamus boss, exclusive to SOTE. This odd choice to add one enemy indicates thatElden Ring’s DLC content wasn’t entirely off the table forNightreign, and could indicate how the developer might be planning on implementing more in the future.FromSoftware has promised DLC updates for Nightreign, which could bring both old and totally new things to the game.
Hippopotamus aside, one potential reason whyNightreigndoes not contain any SOTE content could be due to development timelines.Nightreignis being worked on in parallel withother projects at FromSoftware such asThe Duskbloods, so it does not have access to all the developer’s resources. Naturally, the scope of what can be added will be squeezed by this, and even a year between SOTE andNightreignmay not have been enough time to adequately port its content over to the Roguelike title. The studio may be planning to trickle SOTE content intoNightreignover time, but it seems plausible that the game’s first major content update could be a full roster of enemies and items fromElden Ring’s beloved DLC to giveNightreigna large bump in players.

Although a slim possibility, there is a chance thatNightreigndoesn’t implement any more ofElden Ring’s DLC content at all, and chooses to add totally new things instead. There is also a large back catalog ofDark SoulsandSekirocontent available too, although sadlyBloodbornecontent won’t be coming toNightreign. One thing seems certain, though: with such a great reception, FromSoftware could easily keep supportingNightreignfor years to come, tiding players over between its single-player releases.
