Dungeons and Dragonsjust released an Unearthed Arcana playtest that includes nine different magic-themed subclasses, including revamped versions of classics like the Transmuter Wizard, Arcane Archer Fighter, and Arcana Cleric, as well as two new options: the Tattooed Warrior Monk and Ancestral Sorcerer. Players can try out these new and improvedDungeons and Dragonssubclasses and provide feedback ahead of their official publication in the future.
Unearthed Arcana are playtest documents Wizards of the Coast shares to let the public try out new content and provide feedback ahead of its official publication. Many of these documents offer additional character options, such as the brand-newPsion class introduced inDungeons and Dragons’ last Unearthed Arcanain May.
Now, Wizards of the Coast has put out yet another Unearthed Arcana that high magic fans won’t want to miss. There are nine mystic subclasses inthisD&Dplaytest document, seven of which are revamped versions of existing options. The Arcana Domain Cleric gains expertise in its namesake skill and can modify its offensive and defensive magic, while the Arcane Archer Fighter gains additional skill proficiencies and ranged weapon options, more Arcane Shots, and core abilities faster. Four classic Wizard archetypes – Conjurer, Enchanter, Necromancer, and Transmuter – all appear in this UA as well, each getting some much-needed attention. Lastly, the Hexblade Warlock received even more adjustments from its appearance inD&D’s horror subclass Unearthed Arcana, including the new Unyielding Will and Malign Brutality features.
D&D Unearthed Arcana Arcane Subclasses
The two new subclasses in this UA are the Tattooed Warrior Monk and the Ancestral Sorcerer. The Tattooed Warrior is similar to the originalDungeons and Dragons2014 Way of the Four Elements Monk, as they inscribe tattoos on their body that let them cast spells, resist damage, and perform other supernatural feats by spending Focus Points. Meanwhile, the Ancestral Sorcerer channels the power of an ancient magical predecessor, adding their Charisma modifiers to Intelligence checks, improving Innate Sorcery, and enhancing Counterspell, Dispel Magic, and concentration effects.
It is unclear whichDungeons and Dragonsbookthese Unearthed Arcana subclasses might appear in. August’sEberron: Forge of the Artificerwill likely introduce the Artificer class, October’s unnamed book will have horror subclasses, and November’sForgotten Realms Player’s Guidewill add the Faerun optionsD&Dplaytested back in January. Like the Psion, these arcane subclasses may be for unrevealed projects coming in 2026 or later.
