The following article contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Super.
Dragon Ball Superis still on a break, but fans remain excited about what’s coming next in the story. MostDragon Ball Superfans hope that the next arc will be the long-awaited Black Frieza Arc. Since his introduction in the Granolah Arc, fans can’t wait to see him in action against the Z-Fighters.
However, even though Black Frieza is insanely strong, there is a character that could pose even more danger to the main characters. This character is, for now, an ally, but he could easily become an antagonist at any time in the story: Broly.
Broly Is Not Evil, But He Lacks Self-Control
Broly was originally introduced inDragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyanand featured once again inDragon Ball Z: Broly - Second ComingandDragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly. Together, these three movies make up theBroly Saga, and he has become widely popular since his debut. However, the Broly Saga is not canon to the manga’s timeline,soDragon Ball Superreintroduced the characterbut changed a few things. The character was first featured in theDragon Ball Super: Brolymovie, which was later briefly referred to in the manga, making him undeniably canon to the manga’s timeline (or at leastSuper’s timeline, if we consider a potentialDragon Ballmultiverse).
Although Broly is the central antagonist in the movie, he is not an evil person, which contrasts sharply with theDragon Ball Zmovie (where he comes across as a violent, psychotic killer). In fact, he is mostly quiet, polite, gentle, and peaceful. However, once provoked, his Saiyan nature arises, and he goes into a berserk mode. Once he transforms into the Legendary Super Saiyan, he starts to kill everything without thinking. In a sense, he is a bit similar to Gohan but more uncontrolled. Gohan’s true potential is unleashed when he is seriously provoked, but he never truly loses his self-control.
Broly Would Be Incredibly Powerful In An Evolved Form
Broly befriended Goku and Vegeta and became their latest rival. However, fearing that Frieza would come after him, Goku took Broly to Beerus' Planet to protect him. There, Goku tries to train Broly so he can fight without losing self-control. Later, Broly becomes interested in how Gohan can unleash Beast without going berserk. After fighting with Gohan, it is clear that Broly can match Beast. Toyotaro later confirmed that Broly is on par with the strongest transformations of Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and Piccolo.
I was so sure my strength was getting close to its peak… and then this guy showed up and was so much stronger than me! And he’s a Saiyan, just like I am. He’s probably even stronger than Beerus.
— Goku in DBS: Broly
InDB Super, Broly has only been able to transform into the Legendary Super Saiyan, a rare form that is believed to be the final form of the regular Super Saiyan. However, there may be an even stronger form, once featured inDragon Ball Heroes, which is probably themost powerful form Broly ever achievedin anyDragon Ballmedia (though he also transformed into Legendary Super Saiyan 2, LSSJ3, and the Great Ape form of LLSJ in other media). Toyotaro included Great Ape Broly and LSSJ4 Broly in theDragon Ball Heroes: Victory Missionmanga, which could be a hint that any of these might eventually appear inDragon Ball Super. If Legendary Super Saiyan Broly is on par with the strongest Z-Fighters, then logically Legendary Super Saiyan 4 Broly would likely surpass them.
What Are the Chances Broly Will Become an Enemy Again?
What makesDragon Ball Super’s Broly one of the best characters in the franchise is precisely that he is a loving and kind person, but he can suddenly turn into a brutal killer just by getting too excited and losing his self-control over his Legendary Super Saiyan form. Thus,Broly can still become an enemy once again, especially if he unleashes a leveled-up Legendary Super Saiyan form, particularly the LSSJ4. He would likely be stronger than Black Frieza.
However, giventhe route thatDragon Ball Superis following, it seems more likely that Broly will improve his self-control abilities and aid the Z-Fighters in a potential Black Frieza Arc, since Frieza is likely after him. Either way, the Black Frieza Arc would be the perfect opportunity to show Broly unlocking LSSJ4, and from here on, the series could either show him as an ally, an accidental enemy, or even both (first aiding them and then losing control).
When Will Dragon Ball Super Return?
