Throughout the years ofDestiny 2’s expansions, Seasonal events, and other live-service content updates, there have been a wide variety of activities for players to dive into, including PvP, PvE, and PvPvE game modes. Unfortunately, though, despite some of these activities ending up becoming widely lovedby the playerbase, they often meet the same fate as the activities that weren’t so well-received. More specifically, many of the activities inDestiny 2eventually end up in that pesky Destiny Content Vault.

This is especially the case for some of the fan-favorite roguelike game modes inDestiny 2that have come and gone over the years. Even with some of these popular roguelike game modes expected to return forDestiny 2’s new Portal activity hub inThe Edge of Fate expansion, there’s no guarantee that these game modes will stick around. However, while there may not be a proper, permanent roguelike game mode inDestiny 2that fans have been wanting, there may already be a better alternative thanks to the new Banes and other difficulty modifiers providing a roguelike twist on the majority of core activities.

Roguelike Fans Are Eating Good in Destiny 2’s Edge of Fate Expansion

Before the recent release of The Edge of Fate expansion,Destiny 2’s Banes were primarily exclusive to high-difficulty endgame content. So, players who wanted to experience these roguelike gameplay modifiers either had to dive into the deep end ofDestiny 2’s Dungeons and Raids, or wait until a dedicated roguelike limited-time mode was featured in a Seasonal Event or update. Naturally, since roguelike fans previously had limited options in Destiny 2, this makes some of the changes introduced in The Edge of Fate expansion a cause for celebration.

Destiny 2’s Portal Will See the Return of Fan-Favorite Game Modes

WithDestiny 2’s new Portal activity hub, the Coil roguelike game mode is expected to soon return from the Destiny Content Vault. Given that this game mode has been removed before, there’s no telling how long it will be available when it comes back, so roguelike fans should act fast and dive into it if and when this game mode returns. However, even beyond the potential return of the Coil among other game modes in the Portal, the new Banes and difficulty modifiers inDestiny 2now being present in more than just the highest-difficulty content means that roguelike enthusiasts are eating good in The Edge of Fate expansion.

Destiny 2’s Edge of Fate Expansion Doubling Down on Banes is a Win on Multiple Fronts

Not only are Banes now present in nearly every core game mode inDestiny 2, surprisingly includingThe Edge of Fate campaign, but players now have more control over them than ever before, with virtually infinite possibilities for combining Banes and other difficulty modifiers. Ultimately, this is a massive win on multiple fronts: these modifiers improve the replayability of endgame content, make roguelike mechanics more accessible, and give players a direct way to improve the quality of loot from core activities.

In addition to the Banes and difficulty modifiers that are currently available, more are said to come in the near future.

Despite a permanent roguelike game mode remaining ahighly requested feature inDestiny 2, the new Banes and difficulty modifiers being mixed into nearly every PvE activity are arguably a better alternative. This is because there’s always a slim possibility that a dedicated roguelike game mode could once again end up in the Destiny Content Vault. WhereasDestiny 2doubling down on Banes in The Edge of Fate expansion presumably means these roguelike mechanics aren’t going away anytime soon in the Year of Prophecy. So, while fans may not have the full, roguelike pie they’ve been waiting for, the new Banes and other customizable difficulty modifiers are delicious slices of this pie that can be found wherever players look.
