Death Stranding 2wastes no time reminding you that the world is still broken. From the first few deliveries, you’re already dealing with BTs—those floating, half-visible things that turn even simple walks into something you’ve got to think twice about.
You’ll run into them in the middle of nowhere, with no warning and no music, just the rising tension as your scanner starts to go wild. If you’re unsure about how to deal with them, here’s what you should know about whether it’s better to keep your distance or take the fight to them inDeath Stranding 2.
How To Avoid BTs in Death Stranding 2
Avoiding BTs is quite difficult, as getting too close to them triggers a fight sequence that you usually can’t outrun.Since Sam has a case of DOOMS, he’s able to sense nearby BTs. This ability, combined with theOdradek armyou carry, helps pinpoint their location and how far away they are. You can navigate through BT-infested areas by changing course if the Odradek starts spinning rapidly.Holding your breath by pressing R1 also masks your presence slightly, but itdrains stamina.
Make sure you don’t hold it too long, or you might come face-to-face with a BT and have no stamina left to dodge out of the area.
If you spot a Timefall Shelter nearby, head for it and rest underneath. Any BT that tries to approach will be neutralized by the red mist the shelter emits.
If you’re using a vehicle, you can often boost your way out of BT territory—provided you stay far enough away to avoid triggering the tar phase. However, in mountainous or hilly regions, your vehicle may slow down too much, making it harder to escape and increasing the chances of being dragged into the tar.
Should You Fight the BTs in Death Stranding 2?
Fighting the BTs ultimately comes down to whether or not you have the right tools and equipment to handle the situation. In most cases, engaging and clearing them out can be quicker and safer than trying to sneak past by holding your breath.Successfully defeating them clears the path entirely, letting you move through the area without constant interruptions or fear of being dragged into a fight. However, since resources like Blood Grenades and Anti-BT weapons aren’t always in good supply—especially duringthe early chapters—it’s often more practical to avoid combat altogether.Using the Odradek arm to track BTs and adjust your routeis a much more efficient approach when you’re under-equipped.
That said, the game does introduce Orders that specifically task you with eliminating all BTs in a designated area. During these missions, avoiding conflict isn’t an option. In these situations, being prepared with the right loadout can make the difference between a smooth takedown and being overwhelmed.
How To Kill BTs in Death Stranding 2
Dealing with BTs is much easier than it sounds. Before your first encounter with them, you’ll be provided with a Blood Grenade, which allows you to stagger BTs with each throw—three to four grenades should be enough to take down most of them.Blood Grenades are easy to fabricate at any Safehouse or Distribution Centre, and you can also find a few scattered around BT-infested areas. To use them, access the Weapons/Tools wheel byholding the right D-padand equip them by pressing X. Then, press L2 to aim and R2 to throw.
Aside from grenades, guns are also effective against BTs, but they must be loaded with Anti-BT bullets. Not allranged weaponswork on BTs, so don’t waste your ammo by unloading an entire magazine only to find it has no effect. As you progress through the episodes, you’ll unlock more weaponsthat are highly effective against BTs.
