How DC Worlds Collide’s Dozen Game Modes Keep Things Constantly Interesting

When asked about the decision to include 12 game modes inDC Worlds Collide, Katelynd LaVallee, VP and studio head of Warner Bros. Games San Francisco, explained that every battle mode challenges players differently. Depending on the game mode, fans will have to think thoroughly before assembling their team. For example, “Convergence” is a mode where fans can only bring certain characters into battle, such as exclusively superheroes or supervillains, among others. Bydemanding creativity from playerswhen setting up a squad,DC Worlds Collideaims to offer “something new and fresh to experience every day.”

DC Worlds Collide’s massive playable rosterencourages character-collecting, and, according to director of design Tony Perkins, the dev team didn’t want only a handful of units to stand out. He explained that featuring many game modes lets all characters show off their strengths depending on the scenario or team synergy. It also facilitates catering to a broader range of players. As Perkins remarks,

“You want to be able to serve a wide variety of players and also ask a lot of questions of the players. That’s what having a lot of game modes does: ensure that characters have different places where they can shine in different parts of the game.”

Puzzle gameplay also plays an important role inDC Worlds Collide. Perkins shares that incorporating puzzles allows the dev team to continuously expand the game. There are several puzzle-related modes inDC Worlds Collide, like “Exploration” or Martian Manhunter’s “Telepathic Link,” but there is one particular mode that Perkins highlights. “Digital Universe"combines puzzles and combatto create a maze with roguelite elements. The design director states that he’s especially interested in developing content for this game mode and seeing how players react to it:

“That’s an area where we can evolve and make new puzzle pieces and combine them in new ways to make a new intricate map for players to uncover. We’ve got a lot of tools in our kit to continue to evolve this over time, and I’m excited to see where players gravitate to.”

Perkins comments thatDC Worlds Collide’s “macro and micro” characteristics result in players never feeling stuck. “It’s a little bit of a plate-spinning trick in the game modes and in your roster,” he says. The “macro” scale is tied to its numerous game modes. If fans ever feel stalled in one area, they can comfortably switch to another mode and advance there. Meanwhile, the “micro” scale refers to focusing on team andRPG character progression. Either way, players will always find something that needs their attention.

“There’s always something fun to dig into and find. And it’s always rewarding, there’s always some track that’s able to get pushed forward each day.”

The dev team states thatDC Worlds Collideisn’t designed to feel difficult from the start, but instead easy to learn as players progress. More new characters are confirmed to come, starting with a Superman variant fromJames Gunn’s DC Universe. Krypto, Mister Terrific, and Guy Gardner will follow later in the summer. Moreover,DC Worlds Collideis gifting all players a free copy of Harley Quinn to commemorate over five million pre-registrations.
