Summary
The concept of theGreen Lanternfirst appeared in 1940, with Alan Scott being the original character to take on this mantle. Scott used a magic ring to fight crime. However, it wasn’t until 19 years later that the Green Lantern Corps was established, transforming the idea into a galactic police force rather than having Scott as the sole ring bearer.
Hal Jordan became the firstGreen Lanternunder this new concept. Throughout the years, several other characters have worn the emerald ringfrom Earth, either acting as replacements for Hal Jordan or serving as his understudies. Green Lantern was notably portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 movie, though its weak reception put a stop to the Corp’s presence in film for some time. However, under James Gunn’s newDC Universe, the Lanterns are set to make a comeback, and this time, it is hopefully going to be better received.
The Green Lantern Of The Far Sector
The latest Green Lantern from Earth, Sojourner Mullein, is a former soldier and police officer who was approached by a member of the Guardians of the Universe to become a Green Lantern. She was assigned to a sector so distant from Oa,the home of the Green Lanterns, that it does not have a designated number; it is simply referred to as the Far Sector.
Though she is a relatively new character, Sojourner has quickly gained popularity. Having experienced racial abuse on Earth, she developed a strong ethical code and uses her abilities as a Green Lantern to help create a peaceful universe, ensuring that no one suffers as she once did.
The Teen Lantern
Keli Quintela is a character associated with the new incarnation of the Young Justice team in DC Comics. She is a child prodigy who managed to reprogram a gauntlet to access the powers of a Green Lantern ring, unbeknownst to the Corps, after witnessing the death of Green Lantern Iorl.
Later, she was officially inducted into the Green Lantern Corps and even had the opportunity to visit Oa. Keli collaborates with Young Justice to combat crime and is a valuable asset to the team, utilizing her powerful constructs enhanced by her vast intelligence.
The First Human Female Green Lantern
Jessica Cruz first appeared in comics in 2013, but her full debut came the following year. She was chosen to be the next recipient of the Ring of Volthoom, also known as the Power Ring, which is most famously associated with Hal Jordan from Earth-3 of the Crime Syndicate. Initially, Jessica became the new Power Ring and was corrupted by the ring’s dark powers. However, she quickly overcame this influence and was mentored by Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern of the prime universe. She ultimately became a member of the Green Lantern Corps.
Jessica has garnered significant popularity in DC media, establishing herself as one of the key Green Lantern characters. She has been featured in animated films such asJustice League vs. The Fatal FiveandDC’s League of Super-Pets.
Temporarily Replaced Hal With His Ring
Simon Baz was born in Dearborn, Michigan, and is of Lebanese American descent. Throughout his life, he faced racism due to his Muslim background. After being wrongly accused of being a terrorist, he was granted a Green Lantern ring during his interrogation.
This ring was a unique fusion of both Hal Jordan’s and Sinestro’s rings, as the Guardians of the Universe were attempting to replace the Green Lanterns with their new Third Army. However, the remaining Green Lanterns thwarted this plan, and Simon formally joined their ranks. Since then, he has become a member of the Justice League and frequently partners with Jessica Cruz as a duo.
The Universe’s Last Green Lantern
After his predecessor, Hal Jordan, destroyed the Green Lantern Corps in a fit of rage, the last remaining Green Lantern ring was bestowed upon Kyle Rayner. He became the sole member of the Corps throughout the 1990s and into the early 2000s. When Hal returned, he regained his status and rose through the ranks, ultimately becoming an Honor Guard of Oa.
Rayner is regarded as one of the greatest Green Lanterns of all time. He has served as the host for powerful entities like Ion and Parallax and has also taken on the role of the White Lantern, which is a synthesis ofall the different colored power rings. At times, his strength has been exceptional.
After losing her powers, Jennifer was given the spare Green Lantern ring from her boyfriend, Kyle Rayner, and served alongside him as a member of the Corps. Since the DC Universe was rebooted in the New 52, Jade has not reappeared, although she made her live-action debut in the CW seriesStargirl.
The Second Backup Up To Hal
After Hal Jordan’s first backup, Guy Gardner, was seriously injured, Hal chose John Stewart as his new backup, who occasionally filled in for Hal when he was unavailable. In the 1980s, John Stewart even replaced Hal as the primary Green Lantern, as DC sought greater representation of characters with African heritage. Stewart was only the third Black character introduced by DC.
With a strong ethical code and a sense of justice, John Stewart has gained significant popularity. He has even appeared in place of Hal Jordan in some versions of the Justice League, notably in the animated series that aired in 2001. Yet to make his love-action bow, however, this is soon to change with his inclusionin the DCU’s upcomingLanternsseries.
The First Backup For Hal
Guy Gardner was chosen as Hal Jordan’s backup for the role of Green Lantern in Sector 2814. He is a divisive character, often portrayed as a jingoistic parody of the ultra-macho “red-blooded American male,” and is known for his distinctive red-headed bowl-cut hairstyle.
Although Gardner has taken somewhat of a backseat since the introduction of John Stewart, this is set to change. James Gunn has revived the character, and he is expected to play a significant role in the upcoming projects of the DC Universe, including appearances inSuperman,Peacemaker, andLanterns.
The First Official Earth Green Lantern
After DC revamped the Green Lantern story, Hal Jordan was introduced as the first official Green Lantern of Earth. He was chosen to replace Abin Sur, the previous Lantern of his sector, after witnessing Sur’s death. This pivotal moment led Hal to become a major figure in the DC universe and a prominent member of the Justice League for many years.
For mainstream fans, Hal Jordan is perhaps best known for being portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in the live-actionGreen Lanternmovie; however, this interpretation is often considered less than stellar. An older version of Hal Jordan is set to appear in the upcomingLanternsseries, portrayed by Kyle Chandler.
The First To Don The Green Lantern Mantle
Alan Scott was the first character in the DC Universe to bear the mantle of Green Lantern. He was not originally a member of the Green Lantern Corps, as that concept was developed later. Scott received his powers from a magical ring and lantern known as the Starheart, which has since been retconned to be an experimental power source created by the Guardians of Oa.
Scott wasa member of the Justice Society of America, which predates the Justice League. Over the years, he acted as a mentor to Hal Jordan and other Green Lanterns of Earth, ultimately becoming an honorary member of the Corps, though he was never officially part of it.
