Summary

At some point in nearly every young person’s life, they daydream about putting on a supersuit and saving the world. Well, according toSuperman’s David Corenswet, squeezing into a skintight superhero costume isn’t all that exciting. If anything, it’s downright uncomfortable.

Warner Bros. and DC Studios’sSupermanis set to be the biggest film of the summer, assumingJurassic World: RebirthandThe Fantastic Four: First Stepsdon’t wrangle the top spot from the Man of Tomorrow.Audiences are looking forward to a new, optimistic takeon Superman and the first solo Superman film since 2013’sMan of Steel. Although Zack Snyder’s take on the iconic hero has its fans, most people grew up on Christopher Reeve’s more wholesome incarnation of the character, and James Gunn seems to be going more down that route than anything else. Corenswet himself grew up onSmallville’s Tom Welling, who certainly had a bit of teenage angst about him, but was still a classically inspired version of Superman. Donning the blue and red suit is something Corenswet worked himself up for, even though the initial suit fitting wasn’t all he had thought it would be.

David Corenswet recently sat down for a lengthy interview withPeople, and he elaborated about wearing the form-fitting supersuit.“You hear actors who play superheroes talking about squeezing into the suits,“Corenswet began.“Um, I got kind of claustrophobic in the suit the first time, just like being constricted in all those places at the same time.“He continued,“It was in pieces. The ‘S’ wasn’t even on yet. It was really just about the blue tights. It was quite snug because they had made it to my proportions when I screen tested, where I weighed about 195 pounds. And when I walked in for my first costume fitting, I weighed about 235-240 pounds.“Who would’ve thought wearing a skintight outfit would be so unnerving?

Superman’s David Corenswet Wasn’t In Love With Wearing The Man Of Steel’s Iconic Costume

This is, unsurprisingly, not the first time an actor has taken issue with the comfortability of a supersuit. Just askBen Affleck how he feels about the Batsuityears after hanging it up for good. The suits that costume designers come up with for feature films aren’t designed to be comfortable… they’re designed to look great on the big screen. These actors are getting paid a lot of money to portray famous superheroes, so putting up with a little discomfort simply is part of the job. If looking the part is half the battle, then making sure the suit pops is paramount to a superhero film’s success.

“It was an intense experience and not this amazing, glorious, you know, becoming-the-character moment.”

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more renowned supersuit than Superman’s. After all, he is the progenitor of pretty much every superhero to come after his 1938 debut. While Batman and Spider-Man are close to matchingSuperman’s legendary status, billions around the world recognize the character’s iconography: the ‘S’ shield, the red cape, the blue tights. Everything about Superman simply screams “superhero.”

It isn’t shocking to hear that David Corenswet was a bit uncomfortable in the Superman costume, just as it isn’t shocking that the up-and-coming actor looks great in it. Now we just have to wait and see if hisSupermanfilm lives up to the hype that has been building for months now.
