Date Everythingis a game packed with humor, horror, heart, and, of course, plenty of references. Developed by Sassy Chap Games, a team of long-time actors and game fans themselves, the dating simulator is naturally filled with moments that reference other pieces of media, especially video games. Some ofDate Everything’scharacters are more reference-loaded than others, such as Telly the quote-spouting television or Luke Nuke’m, the microwave who thinks he’s in aMad Maxfilm. But one particularly subtle reference arrives at the perfect time – a nod to a particularly iconic moment fromUndertale.

Date Everythingfeaturing a reference to the popular bullet hell adventureUndertaleisn’t surprising, given the game’s popularity, but the source of the reference is. It comes from none other than Bathsheba the bathtub, voiced byAnjali Bhimani. Bathsheba is an elegant gossip-monger who struggles to make friends due to her haughty attitude and constant snooping. Over the course of her story, players can help her get to know some of the other Dateables in the house – but if those attempts don’t go well, she can end up quoting a certain memorable line.

In one interaction with Bathsheba, she attempts to befriend Barry Styles (Nick Wolfhard,), the beauty supplies Dateable who also lives inDate Everything’sbathroom. Should the player give her bad advice, the conversation can go poorly and result in Barry not wanting anything to do with Bathsheba. Returning to Bathsheba the next day results in not a quote from one of Bhimani’s famous roles such asYatzli inAvowed, but the bathtub saying “You’re gonna have a bad time,” while one of her eyes glows blue.

The phrase “You’re gonna have a bad time” is spoken bySans the skeleton, a popular character fromUndertale.Should the player pursue a Genocide route (killing everyone they encounter), the otherwise affable Sans will grow serious and challenge the player to a battle, with one of his eyes glowing blue just as Bathsheba’s does. The following fight is one ofUndertale’strickiest, often requiring multiple attempts before the skeleton can be defeated.

Date Everything’sSans Reference Comes Soon After A Major DeltaruneRelease

The timing of Bathsheba’s Sans reference inDate Everythingcouldn’t be more perfect. The dating simulator was released on June 17, just two weeks after the June 5 release ofDeltaruneChapters 3 and 4.Deltaruneis a successor toUndertalethat seems to be set in an alternate universe, featuring new versions of characters players know and love. LikeUndertale, Deltaruneis known for its tricky boss battles, in particular the ultra-hard “bonus bosses” featured as optional content in each chapter.

While Bathsheba’s quote – which is memorialized as an in-game Collectible, so players can continue to view Bathsheba’s unique eye-glowing sprite – isDate Everything’sonly directUndertalereference, fans on Reddit have begun referring toDate Everything’s"Hate Everything" path as the game’s “Genocide Route.” Like theinfamous murder-happyUndertaleroute, getting the “Hate Everything” achievement requires being outright rude and abusive to every character in the game, breaking their hearts a hundred times over in pursuit of a single trophy.

Date Everythingis filled with brilliant references, from adryer that sounds likeBaldur’s Gate 3’s Astarionto a D20 who hosts multiple"Grottoes & Gargoyles"campaigns for players who want to win his nerdy heart. But Bathsheba suddenly quoting Sans fromUndertaleis one of the game’s most shocking and humorous moments, and it comes perfectly at a time whenUndertaleandDeltaruneare re-emerging in the public consciousness. Perhaps a Sans-inspired character, such as an anatomy skeleton, could even appear in a futureDate EverythingDLC – or Bathsheba could be a completely unexpected bonus fight in aDeltarunechapter.
