As a new trainer at Tracen Academy inUmamusume: Pretty Derby, you’re responsible for kickstarting the careers of many ambitious horsegirls and training them to win the URA Finale, a racing program freshly introduced by the academy’s director.
Trainingstrong Umamusume isn’t just important for winning the URA Finale; it’s also essential for building a top-tier team of veteran racers. These legends can compete in Team Trials and other races, pass on their skills, and inspire the next generation of horsegirls.
How to Train Any Character in Umamusume: Pretty Derby
To train a character inUmamusume: Pretty Derby, start by entering Career mode. From there, pick the Umamusume of your choice, select her Legacy Team and Support cards, and then focus on raising her training stats while completing her career goals. For beginners, here’s a simple and easy breakdown of each step, along with tips to help you build high-ranked Umamusume in the game.
Choose a Horsegirl
First things first, in Career mode, you’ll need to pick the horsegirl you want to train. Whilethere are 26 characters in total, the list will only show the ones you’ve unlocked. Each Umamusume comes with her own set of skills, attributes, and aptitudes, making some better at certain things than others.
If you’re just starting out and unsure of who to pick, Sakura Bakushin is a great choice. She’s a front-runner who can clear races easily, and she’s also one of the five characters unlocked by default.
Pick the Right Legacy
After choosing a horsegirl, your next step is to link her with twoLegacy Umamusume. These are past racers who grantstat boosts(like Speed, Stamina, Guts, Distance, etc.) andskill hintsat the start of training and during various points throughout your character’s career, so selecting the right ones really matters. Since Legacy Umamusume pass down their own stats, a good tip is to choose ones that align with what you want your trainee to be good at.
For example, if you’re aiming to build a strong Sprint racer, pick a legacy horsegirl with an A rating in Sprint on her aptitude chart. If you’re confused, however, going for veterans withexcellent Speed, Power, and Stamina, along with an A rank in Mile and Front style, is usually the best choice.
Just so you know, the Legacy list will only include horsegirls you’ve already trained and completed careers with, so if you want better options, you’ll need to train more characters. You can also hire guest Legacy Umamusume from trainers you follow, though guest picks will cost some in-game currency (Monies).
Lock in Relevant Support Cards
Next up, you’ll need to make a deck ofsix Support Cards; five from the onesyou’ve pulled in the Gacha, and one borrowed card. For those who don’t know, these are the horsegirls who train with your main character and help her out with things like better starting stats (like Wit or Stamina), more fans, better mood, extra race stats, and more.
Support cards also shape what kind of skills your Umamusume focuses on during training, since she gets skill hints based on the ones in your deck. This helps her figure out where she’s weaker and what to work on. Before you start the run, you may hit the Perks button to see if your deck is giving you the right kind of stat boost. attempt to go forSSR or SR cardswith relevant stats if you can, and don’t forget to level up your support cards as it makes a big difference.
Keep Training and Finishing Career Goals
Once everything’s set and your trainee is enrolled at the academy inUmamusume: Pretty Derby, you’ll soon get the option to start training her to reach her career goals. These goals show up at the top of the screen and usually involve entering and winning well-known races before she can qualify for the URA Finale. You’ll also see a fan count requirement listed next to each goal.
As the trainer, your job is to prep your horsegirl for the races listed in the goals bar (one at a time). You’ll have a limited number of days to train her before each race. Here are thecore stats you need to improve, and what each one means:
About 900 before the URA Finale.
Stamina
Determines how long your horsegirl can keep running without getting tired.
460 to 600
Guts
Gives your horsegirl the willpower to hang on, especially near the end of a race.
200 to 350
Wit
Helps your horsegirl stay focused and make smart moves mid-race, even when she’s behind.
320 to 400
The Hints icon is super helpful during training. It’ll tell you which stats to focus on, when to rest, or if it’s time to visit the Infirmary. Keep an eye on it.
Early on, it’s a good idea to train inSpeed, Stamina, and Wit, along with whichever session has the most Support card friends joining in for bonus gains (you can spot them in the top right corner). Each of these sessions uses up one day and drains your character’s energy. If her energy gets too low, use theRest option to recover. Don’t push too hard, or she might get injured.
Mood also plays a big role in training and racing. If your horsegirl is in a bad mood, her performance and stat gains will take a hit. You can cheer her up withrecreational outings, but these take up a full in-game day, so you’ll need to be strategic in conversations to keep her mood from dropping in the first place.
If your Umamusume gets injured, her mood will dip even more, so be sure to visit theInfirmarybefore planning any fun outings.
To meet race requirements, you can increase your horsegirl’s fan count by entering extra races through theRaces menu. Lastly, during your three-year journey of training and helping her make it to the URA Finale, keep working on herskillsetto help her clear training races more easily. You can use your Skill Points to unlock abilities; just go for skills that boost Speed and Stamina, or come with a Hint discount, since those are especially useful.
Join The URA Finale and Complete Career in Umamusume: Pretty Derby
InUmamusume: Pretty Derby, most horsegirls will have around 11 career goals, with the final ones usually involving tasks such as placing first in races like the G2 Centaur Stakes, G1 Sprinters Stakes, and G1 Mile Championship. If your character manages to win all the training races with the right fan count, she qualifies for the URA Finale. Beating this final race makes your Umamusume really strong and marks her as a legendaryveteran on the Legacy Umamusume list. She can then be used as inspiration for training future horsegirls.
If your character fails to meet any of her career goals within the training period, her career ends immediately with low stats and a lower rank, and your contract with Tracen Academy is terminated. However, this Umamusume can still be used as a Legacy horsegirl in another trainee’s run.
