It’s easy to understand why legendaryhorrorwriter Stephen King is one of the authors with the most live-action adaptations, as another project is in the works that will bringThe Girl Who Loved Tom Gordonto life. King has produced a litany of iconic novels, includingMisery,The Mist,The Green Mile, andThe Shawshank Redemption, all of which have already received live-action adaptations, and the author’s portfolio never stops being an intriguing source of inspiration for filmmakers.
Adding to the list of King adaptations already coming out this year, includingThe Long WalkandThe Life of Chuck, the prequel seriesIT: Welcome to Derryrecently got an exciting update, as fans prepare to discover the origin of Pennywise the Clown through a 1960s lens. Furthermore, a trailer forThe Running Manremake, which King wrote under the pen name Richard Bachman, welcomed Glen Powell to the dystopian’s lead role, previously portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger. More recently, another adaptation ofThe Standwas given the green light, with theBournetrilogy’s Doug Liman stepping up to the plate to direct.
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon to Be Adapted by JD Mollner and Lionsgate
Reported by The Hollywood Reporter, King’s 1999 novelThe Girl Who Loved Tom Gordonis confirmed to be getting an adaptation, withStrange Darlingdirector JT Mollner on board to write and direct. Mollner previously wroteThe Long Walk’s script, and Lionsgate is certain this professional has a “bright future” in the industry. DespiteGame Rant’s Colin Leggett hoping for an adaptation of one of King’s best stories, Lionsgate has complete faith in Mollner’s vision for this live-action, noting the director’s ability to create “compelling, heartbreaking, and emotional” characters.
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordonis a psychological horror that follows a young Trisha McFarland, who gets lost during a hike with her mother and brother on the Appalachian Trail with only her portable radio to keep her company. Iconic director, the late George A. Romero, was previously attached to an adaptation back in 2005, as well as Lynne Ramsay in 2020, but Lionsgate has now acquired the rights to the source material. Even though none of the cast members for thisThe Girl Who Loved Tom Gordonadaptation have been announced yet, or even rumored, fans shouldn’t expect Stephen King to cameoin the project, since the author seems to be taking a backseat from these traditional roles.
Perhaps the most anticipated adaptation of King’s to be in the works concerns an iconic gunslinger, andThe Dark Towerproject recently got a roadmapfrom its director. Mike Flanagan, the creator behind Netflix’sThe Haunting of Hill HouseandThe Shiningfilm sequelDoctor Sleep, is the auteur undertaking this mammoth project and plans to do it justice. The book series is a dark fantasy western that follows Roland Deschain on a mission to locate the titular tower, and the source material previously received a film rendition by Nikolaj Arcel, starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, which wasn’t well received by critics or fans. If that wasn’t enough live-action King projects, however, Flanagan is also currently filming aCarriereboot series for Amazon.
