When Boruto made his first appearance inBoruto: Two Blue Vortex, he wowed fans not just with his Sasuke-inspired outfit, but the way he appeared from out of nowhere. So when it’s revealed that Boruto used his own form of the Flying Raijin Technique, it did nothing but cement Boruto’s status as a genius among his peers.
However, things start to go awry when Boruto’s Flying Raijin clutch doesn’t seem to make an impact as much in his ongoing fight against Shinju leader Jura. In fact, it seems Jura could fare well on his own while Boruto is able to instantaneously vanish into and reappear from thin air. How big of an impact did the Flying Raijin’s weakness reveal have to Boruto’s kit?
One Of Boruto’s Gamechanger Techniques
Perfect For The Fight Against Human God Trees
It’s not enough thatBoruto can create a Rasengan variantpowerful enough to induce permanent vertigo and even obliterate an actual remnant of the Ten-Tails (Hidari, a Shinju), becauseTwo Blue Vortexrevealed Boruto can also do instantaneous teleportation like his grandfather.
In the initial appearance of Boruto’s Flying Raijin Technique, the protagonist is implied to easily transfer locations as long as he has some idea of what to look for. It’s eventually revealed that Boruto can translocate to any of the special metal emblems he carries with him. This explains the many charms his character design came with, as these quite literally represented “waypoints” he can teleport to. It’s implied that Boruto should be able to get to most locations where he left these charms.
A Way To Hone One Of His Otsutsuki Powers
The Otsutsuki Have Natural Teleportation
Kashin Koji said it himself, it’s only thanks to hisTen Directions Shinjutsuthat Boruto was able to develop his Flying Raijin variant within two years of intensive training. It would’ve taken Boruto around six years to master it “ordinarily,” as he wouldn’t have had the foundation even to try to do it. This technique has its roots in the Otsutsuki’s inherent teleportation ability - something Boruto acquired when Momoshiki saved the youngster from the brink of death.
However, Boruto hasn’t been able to “naturally” tap into the teleportation due to the recency of the acquisition. To circumvent this lack of familiarity, Boruto infused objects with his chakra so he can focus on his own chakra signature - allowing him to teleport wherever these objects are located instantaneously. This is why Boruto has so easily been able to travel to Konoha without ever revealing his and Koji’s hideout. It’s also this technique that let Boruto save Konohamaru from certain death at the hands of Matsuri.
The Jura Fight Teases A Big Limitation
Boruto Isn’t Quite There Yet
Interestingly enough,Boruto’s version of the Flying Raijinhas some deviations compared to the original Flying Raijin. For starters, both Tobirama Senju and Minato Namikaze only needed to mark targets with their technique formula to teleport to them, regardless of how long it had been, and even after their death. Minato earned the moniker Yellow Flash because he can teleport to marked kunai he threw around the battlefield, and even his very enemies.
Boruto’s technique has no such freedom. Boruto’s Flying Raijin is best used when his marked objects are within visual range. Not only that, Boruto still has difficulty zeroing in on common shapes, necessitating the creation of trinkets with unique shapes to facilitate ease of teleportation. In Boruto’s fight with Jura, the youngster can acknowledge that the Shinju has far outclassed him… but he doesn’t have an easy way out. This is because of perhaps the most significant limitation of Boruto’s Flying Raijin: Boruto cannot teleport over extreme distances. Even if he wanted to teleport himself and everyone else to safety, there’s no guarantee he’ll even have the time to retrieve others, much less guarantee that his first translocation would even work.
Boruto Needs To Get Out Of His Shell
Momoshiki Might Be The Better Teacher
Boruto’s stuck in a sticky situation now that Jura has also disabled the Rasengan: Uzuhiko, which means it’s very likely that the youngster may get some assistance in the following chapters. However, Boruto should consider eventually getting out of his “human shell” and embracing his new Otsutsuki physiology if he wants to defeat Jura on equal grounds.
For instance, instead of fine-tuning the way he hone in on his trinkets, he can take a page out of Isshiki’s book and create an Otsutsuki rift using another person’s chakra as a basis for his translocation. Should Boruto find a way out of this mess, perhaps he can start asking Momoshiki to help him master the more “natural” Otsutsuki techniques that may prove useful in combat.
