Summary
It’s inevitable that the survivors of a zombie outbreak will end up acting a little more selfishly than usual, considering how hard it is to stay alive, but some people are just downright untrustworthy. Throughout the immensely popularThe Walking Deadseries, there have been several occasions where a character, despite seeming loyal to their group, ended up turning on their allies to further their own goals.
Unfortunately for Rick, he has had to put up with several people betraying him throughout the story, but there have even been a few antagonists who have decided to turn on their masters for one reason or another. It’s always an exciting moment when a character shows their true colors and surprises audiences with a sudden betrayal, with these being among the most shocking inThe Walking DeadTV series.
8Tara Reveals The Existence Of Oceanside
Tara Breaks The Promise She Made To The Isolated Community
There are numerouscommunities and factions within the world ofThe Walking Deadthat all gradually become revealed in the lead up to the war with Negan, but one group that prefers to remain hidden in the shadows is Oceanside. This is a community made up entirely of women who Tara randomly meets during Season 7. Though it’s clear Oceanside could be a useful ally in the war, they plead with Tara not to let their identity be known considering how long they’ve been isolated from the rest of the world.
Though it was a tough decision, Tara eventually goes back on her word and tells Rick about their existence in order to obtain their weapons, and though this may be seen as an immoral decision by the quirky characters, it ultimately ends up winning the survivors more support in the war. At the same time, this betrayal also helps to flesh out Tara as a character, showing her to be much more than just comic relief.
7Dante Reveals He’s A Whisperer Mole
The Terrifying Whisperers Have Eyes And Ears Everywhere
While mostvillains inThe Walking Deadenjoy taking down their enemies with brute force, the Whisperers prefer to take a more strategic approach when apprehending their enemies. One way they do this is by using spies, one of whom being Dante, a man who acts as a doctor within the Alexandria safe zone but is secretly spreading paranoia and fear among the residents to further the Whisperer’s zone goals.
For example, it was Dante who would go around spraying messages across the walls of Alexandria when everyone was asleep, yet the next day would act as a happy-go-lucky doctor who was ready to help in any way he could. The brutal scene where Dante reveals his connections to the Whispers is an extremely memorable one that really emphasizes just how dangerous this new villainous group really is, forcing viewers to wonder how many spies there really are hidden around the different communities.
6Spencer Turns On Rick
Spencer Makes It His Mission To Win Over Negan By Turning On Rick
Despite Negan utterly humiliating Rick for much of Season 6, many of the survivors in Alexandria still decide to rally around him in the hope he can one day free them from the Savior’s clutches. The exception to this, however, was Spencer, a young man who dreamed of one day becominga ruthless leader of Alexandriaby winning over Negan and being accepted into his ranks.
To do this, he made it crystal clear in front of everyone that he was more than happy to betray Rick and kill him, and though Negan was clearly just pulling him along for the ride, it was a revelation that still made all fans hate Spencer’s guts. He luckily eventually got what was coming to him, but the fact he was so willing to turn on Rick and the others shows how merciless Spencer truly was.
5Simon Questions Negan’s Leadership
Negan’s Right-Hand Man Starts To Have Second Thoughts
For much of the war, Simon acts as the right-hand man to Negan, always being by his side and being more than happy to carry out any of his orders, no matter how immoral or dangerous they might be. As the conflict starts to come to an end, though, Simon begins having second thoughts and even disobeys a few of Negan’s orders after losing his respect for him as a leader.
This would actually be a massive blow for Negan, especially considering how pro-active Simon was in setting everything up for Negan leading up to the final battle. Though a fair few of Negan’s men ended up betraying him in the end, Simon was a particularly heavy loss for the Savior’s leader.
4Jadis Works With Negan
Jadis And Her Rag-Tag Group Of Junkers Find A Better Deal
The Scavengers are the weirdest faction in the series. As a bunch of misfits living among debris and rubble, they don’t exactly get along with outsiders, something Rick learns pretty quickly after being thrown into a mini arena with a spiked zombie upon meeting Jadis for the first time. After all the trials and tribulations, though, it seems as though Rick is finally able to strike a deal with the Scavengers to help out when the war finally arrives, but this isn’t exactly how things play out.
One of the most intense moments of Season 7 sees Jadis and her groupsurround the Alexandria safe zonearmed to the teeth with lethal weaponry. As someone who only looks out for herself and her community, she accepted the better deal offered by Negan, and though this group would eventually come back around to Rick’s, it was still a betrayal not many fans saw coming.
3Dwight Helps Out Rick’s Group
Dwight Would Secretly Help Out Rick And Daryl To Get Back At Negan
To say Dwight had a hard time while working under Negan would be putting it lightly. After having half of his face burned by an iron and his wife taken away from him, Dwight was forced to serve Negan in fear, but after his wife Sherry is able to escape, he eventuallymusters up the courage and braveryto work alongside Rick and the others in order to help take Negan down once or for all.
To ensure his true affiliations remain hidden, Dwight manages to work with Rick’s group in a few sneaky ways, such as by firing paper messages with an arrow to leak them information that might be useful. Dwight is often considered one of the best written characters in the show for how compelling and interesting his character arc is to follow, and it was inspiring to see him stand up against his oppressor after all the torment and suffering he had been forced to endure.
2Eugene Works With The Saviors
The Wicked Smart Eugene Devotes His Talents To Negan And The Saviors
There’s always going to be at least a few people who end up becoming traitors during wartime, but Rick and the gang lost one of their most viable assets in Eugene after he decided to ally himself with Negan and the Saviors. Eugene is undoubtedly one ofthe smartest characters in the series, and as a result, Negan made sure to get as much use out of him as possible.
It would be Eugene who created the army’s worth of ammunition that Negan and the Saviors would use in the final battle. However, while it was definitely shocking to see Eugene standing alongside Negan, it turns out that, in the end, this was actually a ploy to sabotage the villain’s forces, providing them with explosive ammunition that backfired as soon as they pulled the trigger.
1Shane Tries To Shoot Rick
Shane Tries To Take Rick Out Of The Picture For Good So He Can Be The Group’s Leader
Despiteonce being the best of friendsbefore the world ended up going to hell, Rick and Shane don’t exactly get along all that well once they are reunited at the beginning of Season 1. After believing Rick had died when the outbreak began, Shane took it upon himself to become the leader of the abandoned survivors, which also included Lori and Carl, Rick’s wife and son, respectively.
Needless to say, there is a tension in the air any time these two interact with one another because of what Shane has been up to behind the scenes. However, it also becomes clear that Shane’s mind is slowly becoming warped, acting a lot more violently and irrationally until eventually deciding to lure Rick out into a forest with the intention of killing him. While Shane was luckily taken down before he was able to take Rick down, it still made for an extremely emotional moment that no longtime fan will ever be able to forget.
