Summary
2025 is halfway over, and there is already an impressive number of horror movies, TV shows, and games, including sequels and original titles. In the film sphere,Final Destination Bloodlineshas done quite well at the box office after the franchise has been gone for a decade, andUntil Dawn’s movie was seen as a decent film adaptation. Other upcoming horror sequel films include28 Years Later,M3GAN 2.0, andFive Nights at Freddy’s 2.
In the world of horror games, there have been some sequels and remasters released so far in 2025, with more on the way unless they get delayed. What are they, and are they worth looking into? Let’s find out in a brief preview.
Days Gonewas originally released for the PS4 in 2019 asan open-world zombie game. It then got ported to PC platforms in 2021 and, after a long stint of exile, it returned for PS5 viaDays Gone Remasteredearlier in 2025. It’s not quite a franchise, but given Sony’s attempt to keep it alive despite some layoffs, it’s clear thatDays Gonewill return in a big way someday. Right now, it has a cult status as a hidden gem on most platforms, and this remaster is worth a look for those that missed it before.
Death Strandingis another big PlayStation game that was released in 2019 with an open-world design. The overall structure followed a delivery man in the apocalypse who had to be wary of environmental trappings and looters. There were also invisible entities known as BTs that could snatch players into another dimension, which is where the horror aspects came into play.
While this title, and its sequelDeath Stranding 2: On the Beach, are not full horror games, they have enough juice to make players quake in fear as they try and sneak past these nightmarish horrors.Hideo Kojima’s nextgame in this series is set to release soon.
6DreadOut Remastered Collection
Two Games, One Girl’s Nightmare
DreadOutis an obscure horror game from 2014 that was originally released on PC platforms and quietly gained a following. Thanks to theDreadOut Remastered Collection, console players can now enjoy the game, as the collection was released earlier this year.
There are two games in the collection, and bothfollow a high school studentthrough abandoned buildings filled with ghosts and other nightmarish beings. It falls more into theFatal FrameandSilent Hillcategory of horror games, with atmosphere being important to the mix, but there is combat involved too.
Dying Light 2: Stay Humanwas released in 2022 after some delays, but it was worth it for fans. It was set to get a big DLC push, which then became its own standalone content viaDying Light: The Beast.
Players can expect the same open-area design as inprevious entries, withplenty of parkour freedomto run away from corrupted monstrosities when health and ammo are running light. As always, melee combat will play a big part too, so that players can feel that visceral feedback when rocking zombies in the face with a piece of wood when the game releases in a few months.
This series became popular with players who enjoyedhorde-based modes in gameslikeGears of War,but in a more gore-filled manner. The last entry was in 2016, and now the series returns almost a decade later withKilling Floor 3. It will be interesting to see how the series will be improved after being gone for so long. But even if not much changes, fans are still going to be into it as long as they can shoot and pummel their way through the undead. The game is set to release soon on multiple platforms, so gather a party for launch and let the blood fly.
Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destinywas released exclusively for the PS2 in 2002, and it has remained there ever since. A bigger return for the series is set to happen in 2026 with the release ofOnimusha: Way of the Sword, the first new console game since 2006.
As exciting as that will be to play, theremaster ofOnimusha 2: Samurai’s Destinyis still a great way to relive the heyday of theOnimushafranchise. With multiple characters to play, branching storylines, a cheap price, and a short run time, this remaster is a welcomed addition to any horror collection.
Poppy Playtimedebuted in 2021 for PC platforms, and it has since released chapters on an almost yearly schedule. The last chapter came out in 2024. This latest version was released earlier in 2025 and will debut soon on consoles.Poppy Playtimefalls in line with the streamer-type of horror games, including theFive NightsandBendyfranchises, which provide plenty of jump scares set in nostalgic pastime locations. The frights may be cheap inPoppy Playtime: Chapter 4,but they are everlasting thanks to the nightmarish designs of these “toys.”
Silent Hill 2’sremake andSilent Hill: The Short Messagebrought the series back from the dead in 2024. Konami is keeping up with the revival of one of their most beloved franchises withSilent Hill f,which is set to release in the fall. It’s a new setting for the series, as it takes place in 1960s Japan instead of somewhere within the U.S. Even though it’s a new town, the same things are happening in Ebisugaoka as they didin Silent Hillwith monstrous doll-like entities scaring up teens through foggy streets. For many, this is THE horror sequel to keep an eye on in 2025.
