While formations technically aren’t a thing inRematch, with there being no way to assign these, teams can still try and stick to thebest 5 vs 5 football formations. Having structure means players know their roles, and each area of the pitch should be covered in some way. Naturally, the bestRematchformations areeasier to implement for teams of friends, but by using voice comms, players can try to convince their fellowranked playersto form up. Other players will also organically float to their own roles, and then readers canfill in the last spot of a formation, somewhat of their own choice.

Seeing as players all have the same stats and skills, formations inRematchshould also be fluid. For example, when holding onto a lead, teams can switch to more defensive formations. This isn’t like real life, where putting a striker in defense might be a liability. Another reason for switching formations is toadapt to the opposing team. For example, if they have two strikers lingering up front, a lone defender might not be enough.

Rematch 1-3 Formation

51-3 (One Defender, Three Attackers)

High Press Formation, Ideal For Chasing A Lead

The 1-3 formation is easily themost risky, and should only be attempted with acompetent keeper and lone defender to rely on. This formation is all aboutpressing high up the pitch, and not letting the other team breathe in their own half. It should mostly be utilized whenchasing a two-goal deficitor when down one in the last minute.Don’t send all four players up front, as someone needs to catch long balls and feed the front three while ensuring the team doesn’t fall further behind.

The three attackers should berelentless in their pursuit of the ball, using thedefensive stance and dashto intercept passes at the back. The middle striker should attempt to hang back slightly when the wingers have the ball, waiting for passes, crosses, and rebounds off the back wall. If the opposition pushes beyond the halfway line, two players should try to get back and help in midfield, while one waits up front. High pressing works better inRematchthan real life, as there isno long-term stamina drain.

Rematch 3-1 Formation

43-1 (Three Defenders, One Attacker)

Park The Bus - All Out Defense

The 3-1 formation is arguably themost defensiveyou can get inRematch, butattacking options are severely limited, so this is best deployed when teams arealready up by two goals, or one at the very end. Thereshouldn’t be any gaps in defensewhile playing 3-1, with one defender able to pressure the winger in possession, while the others wait in the box, marking attackers.

When possession is gained, the team has two options:play from the back with lots of short passesbetween defenders, orhoof it upto the lone striker. In some situations, this striker may not even try to score, but instead run the ball into the corner to waste time. Thisstriker is crucialas a threat and someone who can respond to hasty clearances.

Rematch 2-2 Formation

32-2 (Two Defenders, 2 Attackers/Midfielders)

Well-Structured & Balanced, Utilizing Space

Afairly simple formationforRematchand 5-a-side football in general is 2-2, withtwo at the backand two forwards who also drop into midfield. This should never lead to situations where nobody is defending or attacking, and will be sufficient for dealing with a team that leaves two lingering up front.

When attacking, the ball can be passeddown the line or across the pitch. When one of the wingers is in the corner, they can either cross the ball or play it back to the defender behind them. Rebounding off the wall is another greatway to score inRematchwhen attacking as two, with the second player volleying it home.

Rematch 2-1-1 Formation

22-1-1 (Two Defenders, One Midfielder, One Attacker)

Defensively Solid, Whilst Having A Central Plan Of Attack

If teams are looking tohold onto a lead, whilststill having options, the defensively solid 2-1-1 formation can be great. Two defenders are more than enough, and thecentral midfielder can pressure the ball and try to intercept passes. As they also act as abridge for attacking plays and quick counters, they are the most important player in this formation.

The lone striker prevents the other team from throwing all their players into attacks, as they must be marked. Asflanks will rarely be usedin this formation, the defenders or midfielder need to be capable of playing excellentthrough balls for the striker to run onto. Long balls can also work, especially if thestriker heads it down for the midfielder.

Rematch 1-2-1 Diamond Formation

11-2-1 (One Defender, Two Midfielders, One Attacker

The Diamond Formation, Which Is Great For Passing

The diamond formation of1-2-1 is great for passing, as there are alwaystriangles to pass along. This works well withoverlaps and one-twos, with theplayer in possessionalways having options.Long balls are also an option, as the focal striker can head it down to their midfielders.

The defender should also act as adefensive midfield anchor, coming out to meet long balls and hopefully heading the ball forward and to the sides where their midfielders are. On the back foot, at leastone of the midfielders should always drop back, especially if the other team is using two attackers.
