Aggro Crab and Landfall’sPEAKis a multiplayer climbing game that challenges players to ascend five differentbiomes that change layout every day. The game might not seem that hard at first glance, but behind the cute characters and potential for comedy is a difficult game that requires strategy, teamwork, and execution to beat.
ThesePEAKbeginner tips will help players who are getting into the game for the first time understand what to prioritize, what hazards to look out for, andhow to strategically complete each level.
Though these beginner tips forPEAKcan be useful for solo players, this guide is oriented towards players in a multiplayer team. Check out our separateguide for beating PEAK solohere!
1Lend A Helping Hand To Teammates Below…
Help Teammates Save Stamina & Avoid Falling
When playing with others, you’re able to hold down the right mouse button to extend your hand out. If you are above a teammate on flat ground, turn to face them and extend your hand. As they reach the top of the surface, they will speed up to grab your hand and climb up to your location without using any stamina.
This is especially useful if members of your team are low on stamina thanks to hunger, HP damage or other status effects. Have the player with the most stamina climb up to a ledge, thenturn around and offer a helping hand. Teammates with lower stamina will be able to climb distances they wouldn’t normally be able to make, which can make your ascent significantly more efficient.
2…And Use The Crouch Boost To Gain Height
Crouch On Another Player, Then Jump As They Stand Up
Teammates can gain a little bit of extra height without spending much stamina by climbing onto each other. To use the crouch jump boost inPEAK:
If performed correctly, you will hear a sproingy sound effect, then the jumping player will launch a short distance into the airwithout using any stamina. If a ledge is just slightly too far to climb to, use the crouch jump to gain a bit of starting height. Once you get to the top, turn around and help your teammates up with a helping hand.
Look For Ledges & Optimal Routes Before You Start Climbing
One of the worst things you may do is rush through each level without planning ahead. If you rush toward the mountain and don’t consider your path upward, you may find yourself stuck when the Fog arrives.
When starting each biome, take some time to analyze your approach to the obstacles ahead and plan your route upward. In particular, look for possible routes that contain many ledges, shelves, and flat land on the way up. This will give you plenty of opportunities to regain stamina.
Because of how the Caldera and Kiln biomes are laid out, it can be a bit more difficult to plan a route. In Caldera, look for routes across the lava islands with lots of chains. In the Kiln, do your best to plan a route downward that avoids damaging fire surfaces.
4…But Always Have A Plan B
Don’t Be Afraid To Backtrack For A Better Path
A path that seems appealing from a distance may hide dangers and difficult segments that weren’t obvious from far away. Sometimes, you may find yourself stuck for where to go next, and the only obvious route is to backtrack and find another way up.
You will use less stamina (and move faster) when climbing downward or to the side. Don’t be afraid to go backward to search for a more manageable way up,as long as the Fog isn’t imminently closingin on you, that is.
5Learn How To Identify Poisoned Consumables
Poisoned Food Looks Slightly Different
Though most consumables inPEAKwill heal some of your Hunger meter, food you find out in the wild hasa random chance to be poisoned. This includes all types of berries and mushrooms that can be found growing in the first three biomes.
Poisoned items have a very slightly different appearance from normal items. If you come across a bush of red berries, show each one to your teammates to see if any look a bit off.
Any consumable that is green will poison you, including green berries. Other berries and mushrooms may have a slightly different texture compared to the normal variant, or may be tinged with purple or green coloration.
6Save Items For Each Other
Work As A Team To Efficiently Make It To The Top
The key to completingPEAKand making it to the end of the fifth biome is teamwork. Though the game can be completed in solo mode, if you have other players to work with, you’ll have a much easier time finishing each area. Some of the most important parts of teamwork are communicating your needs with one another and saving useful items for each other that could be handy later on.
Every player has three item slots, plus fourif they are wearing a backpack. Even if you don’t need a piece of food, a bandage, an Antidote, or other items, it’s a good idea to keep them in your inventory in case a teammate needs them later on.
7Cook Consumables To Regain More Stamina
Every Consumable Can Be Cooked To Increase Effectiveness
At the top of each biome, you will find a campfire and a set of marshmallows on sticks, one for each member of the party. Marshmallows are not the onlything players can cook inPEAK, though. In fact, every single consumable item can be cooked to increase its restorative properties, including items you wouldn’t think could be cooked.
Everything from mushrooms and berries to trail mix and Energy Drinks can be cooked at any campfire or portable stove. Just be careful not to cook your tool items, as it can break them and prevent you from using them. Cooking rope, for example, will prevent you from being able to extend it downward to help friends up.
8Ropes & Chains Don’t Use Much Stamina
Use Ropes & Chains To Cover Distances More Efficiently
One of the best ways to conserve stamina while climbing is to rely on environmental ropes and chains, and use rope and chain items to your advantage. While climbing a rope or a chain, you will use significantly less stamina and move faster than climbing a wall.
If you jump onto a rope, chain, or vine from a height and grab on, you will conserve your momentum and slide across without consuming stamina. Use this to your advantage in levels like Caldera to cross horizontal gaps quickly.
Use this to your advantage – get players with rope up ledges before everyone else, then let them drop their rope down to make the climb significantly more efficient.
It’s also important toknow the differences between the standard rope items: the normal rope item can be lowered downward, the Rope Launcher will launch a rope downward from the point you fire it at, and the Chain Launcher will connect your current location to the target with a chain.
9Avoid Each Biome’s Unique Mechanics
All Biomes Have Environmental Hazards To Be Wary Of
Every biome inPEAKhas a unique map-wide hazard that players must watch out for, except for the Shores biome which features normal environmental obstacles like poisonous plants and urchins. The Tropics zone features rain, which makes it significantly harder to climb surfaces, while the Alpine level has freezing winds and slippery surfaces that can wreck your stamina bar with the Frost status effect.
Caldera and the Kiln feature similar hazards. While Caldera has rising lava and random fire explosions in a horizontal level layout, the Kiln features fire surfaces and magma pools in a downward descent layout.
These status effects will not instantly kill you, but they are impactful enough to avoid them whenever possible.
10Revive Each Other At The Ancient Statue
If A Teammate Dies, Reach The Top Of The Biome To Revive Them
If a teammate is downed, you can revive them with a Medkit (if they lost all stamina to HP damage) or a consumable that heals the status effect that downed them (like an Antidote or an Airline Meal). If a teammate stays downed for too long, they will die and turn into a ghost. There are two ways to revive dead teammates: by using a rare Scout Effigy item or by reaching the end of the current biome andinteracting with the Ancient Statue.
The Scout Effigy is an item that will revive one dead teammate, but it can only be used once. Look in Ancient Luggage and the Ancient Statue cache for this rare consumable.
Normally, the Ancient Statue will reward a guaranteed Mythical item. If any teammates are dead, though, they can be brought to life by breaking the Ancient Statue. This is always located a stone’s throw from the ending campsite in each biome (except for the Kiln).
