One of the biggest questions surrounding the show is how many of the original characters will return, and what role they will play in the next round of games.
There isn’t a huge amount of information available regarding every cast member, but from the teaser and the additional confirmed details, it is clear that several familiar faces will be returning in the next season, some expected, and others more surprising.
Spoiler Warning: Major spoilers for seasons one and two of Alice in Borderland.
Confirmed Not To Return: Shuntaro Chishiya & Hikari Kuina
Though it may come as sad news for fans of the show, two of the most iconic and well-loved characters will unfortunately be absent from the final season of the show. Neither Kuina nor Chishiya will be present in season three, as both actors have their own personal priorities to deal with and hence chose not to reprise their roles.
It is a shame, as each brought with them some extra flair and intrigue that filled in the cracks of the main group: Chishiya withhis quick intellectand Kuina with her heart of gold. There may be opportunities for other characters to return, but as far as is known, these are the main two that will be absent going forward.
5Oki Yaba
Taking Pole Position To Orchestrate Evil
Oki Yaba is a mean piece of work who was only around briefly in season two during theJack of Heartsgame. In that brief amount of time, he demonstrated a level of cunning that allowed him to clear the prison and make it out alive, even if it meant making a few sacrifices along the way.
At the end of the season, he, along with Sunato Banda, decided to remain in the Borderlands, being given an unknown level of control and power over their future. In the season three trailer, he is shown once again in a commanding position. Although his exact involvement and intentions are still rather gray, it is clear that he won’t be taking the side of Arisu and Usagi. Instead, he will serve as one of the main antagonists for the two to compete against.
4Rizuna Ann
Strength That Goes Beyond The Lands
Ann is easily one of theAlicefan base’s favorite characters. She’s strong-willed, determined, and stopped at nothing until she and the others were free from the hell that is the Borderlands. In season two, she is brutally injured during one of the final games, but is shown to make it out alive, returning to the real world along with many of the characters who were attacked by the King of Spades.
As has been revealed, a few characters will be returning to the Borderlands, but it isn’t yet known whether Ann will be one of them. From the trailer alone, there doesn’t seem to be any indication that Ann will be one of the previous players jumping back into the playground, and may instead play a role outside. All that can really be said is that she’s still on the side of good, and will want to help Arisu as much as possible.
3Sunato Banda
A New Villain Joins The Fray
Sunato was a sly and unsettling character during season two, who had a lot more screen time than expected during the prison game. He used his intellect to systematically deduce his way through the game and to make it all the way to the end, showing that he has plenty of tricks up his sleeve to help him through the perilous journey.
The decision to stay was a shocking one indeed, but season three reveals that he and a few other characters are now in far greater positions of power to control and maybe even create games of their own. Whatever the specifics may be, he is poised to be themain antagonist of the final season, using his background and cunning to deliver as much pain and suffering to the contestants all over again.
2Yuzuha Usagi
Returning To The Lands One Last Time
Usagi is Arisu’s other half in the show, andthroughout several gamestogether, their connection has only grown stronger. Despite a few close calls and some tough decisions, the two remained strong and managed to make it out alive. They eventually meet up in the real world with no recollection of the events in the Borderlands.
The latest trailer shows that not only are the two together again, but they are now in a much more intimate relationship that has gone as far as engagement. From what has been revealed, Usagi’s story will continue as she once again returns to the world, being forced to go through the torment all over again. Whether Arisu will be able to save her and make it out once more is yet to be seen. Hopefully, there’s a happy ending on the horizon for the star-crossed lovers.
1Ryohei Arisu
The Leading Man Himself
It wouldn’t beAlice in Borderlandwithout an Alice, and Arisu has done a great job working his way through the games despite his lack of real-world skills. Losing friends and acquaintances along the way, the torture he has been through knows no bounds. Being able to leave and start a better life is a reward that anyone would say he deserves.
The most interesting part about his role in the next season is how he ends up back in the games as a way of attempting to save Usagi. It’s clear that, through whatever means, he has to once again play through a series of perilous games and compete not only for his own life, but that of his lover. If he manages to make it out once more, it will be nothing short of a miracle, but viewers will have to wait and see how his story ends in the Borderlands.
