A recent report has confirmed that Christopher Nolan once shut down a spin-off project proposed by Warner Bros. that would have tied into the director’s popularThe Dark Knighttrilogy, and the series was set to star a popular sidekick. Nolan’sThe Dark Knightseries consists of 2005’sBatman Begins, 2008’sThe Dark Knight, and 2012’sThe Dark Knight Rises, and the second film, starring the late Heath Ledger’s magnificent Joker, is considered to be one of the bestBatmanmovies in existence.
Andy Muschietti’s upcomingThe Brave and the Boldlive-action for James Gunn’s DCU is set to star not only the Caped Crusader but the Boy Wonder, Robin, as well, andGame Rant’s Alyssa Avina made a case for the whole Bat-Family to appearin the feature as well. The movie is set to focus on the Batman & Son storyline, focusing on Bruce Wayne’s discovery of his son with Talia al Ghul, but Warner Bros.’ proposed spin-off series, existing within Nolan’s run, could have followed a very different plot.
Christopher Nolan Shut Down The Dark Knight Trilogy Spin-Off Series Starring Robin
Reported by The Wall Street Journal, Warner Bros. was keen to develop a series with Robin as a spin-off project from Nolan’sThe Dark Knighttrilogy. However, the director wanted full creative control over hisBatmanrun and managed to convince the higher-ups to shut down the series. The report didn’t specify when the Robin series was thought to take place, but logic indicates it could have existed within the eight years betweenThe Dark KnightandThe Dark Knight Rises, or after the events of Nolan’s third film. The DC fandom began wonderingwhy Hollywood hated the Boy Wonder, since the character has rarely appeared in any live-action projects. In the end, Nolan decided to do his own Robin tease by turning Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s hungry cop John Blake into a subtle nod to the character.
Throughout DC Comics’ cinematic venture,Robin has only appeared a handful of times in live-action. Most notably, Chris O’Donnell played a version of Dick Grayson in Joel Schummacher’s colorfulBatman ForeverandBatman & Robin, where the character received a decent chunk of screen time and donned vibrant, yet questionable, suits. Robin’s most recent appearance in live action was in theTitansseries, played by Brenton Thwaites and succeeded by Curran Walters’ Jason Todd. Boy Wonder also got a mention inZack Snyder’s Justice League,after being killed off years prior, and many fans rightfully believe the sidekick is long overdue for a modern appearance.
Robin was also touted to appear inThe Batman Part 2, or at least be introduced alongside Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader. There is a litany ofactors who could portray Robin with Battinson, and inThe Brave and the Bold, includingSex Education’s Asa Butterfield,Dune’s Timothee Chalamet, and some have even mentioned a gender-swapped suggestion of puttingGame of Thrones’ Maisie Williams in the hat to play Robin. Opinions have been sung to the tune of Pattinson’s Batman being too young to play a mentor inThe Batman Part 2, which meansThe Brave and the Boldmay be the only project to bank on for Boy Wonder’s resurrection.
