There have been multiple leaks and rumors regardingPokemon Legends: Z-Aover the past few months, from the game’s story and approach to its battle-royale format of the Z-A tournament to which critters are included in the game and which are not. One of the biggest leaks is all about thenew Mega Evolutions inPokemon Legends: Z-A, as well as the returning one, with the original statement being that the game was going to add 27 Megas, down to 26 due to Zeraora’s alleged Mega Evolution being scrapped. 26 new Mega Evolutions is nothing to scoff at, considering how many were in Gen 6 games, but four of them already stand above the rest.
The Pokemon Presents direct scheduled for July 2025 will most likely either confirm or debunk the leaks, but they seem fairly credible considering the number of sources vouching for their veracity. Furthermore, datamines ofPokemon Homeand subsequent rumors seem to confirm thatPokemon Legends: Z-Awill bring back most Mega Evolutions, with the exception of Latios, Latias, and Rayquaza. A big part of the appeal of Mega Evolutions is how the critters change, aesthetically, whereas for battles, their types and moves are the most important aspect. As it stands, though, only four Megas will gain a new type combination.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A Already Has Four Favorite Children With Mega Evolutions
With the fact that seeminglyPokemon Legends: Z-Awon’t include new Pokemonspecies, nor regional forms or cross-gen evolutions, the new Mega Evolutions need to deliver and go above and beyond expectations. However, a disappointing detail is that, out of the leaked 26 new Megas, only four of them seem to have a new type or type combination compared to their regular counterparts. This holds true for Clefable, Meganium, Feraligatr, and Barbaracle, which all gain a secondary type or change one of their previous ones. The types are as follows:
Normally, Clefable is a pure Fairy type, Meganium is a pure Grass type, Feraligatr is a pure Water type, and Barbaracle is Rock/Water. Three new secondary types and one type combination change are exciting, asPokemon Legends: Z-A’s focus on battleswill make them all more relevant, but it’s arguably a missed opportunity to shake things up even more. The current list does include plenty of requested Mega Evolutions inPokemon Legends: Z-A, such as one for Chandelure, all three Gen 6 starters, Dragonite, and the game’s own starter trio. Even if their types end up staying the same, having so many new Mega Evolutions is bound to be a big selling point for the game, especially seeing how loved the battle gimmick is. However, compared to the 10 type additions or changes from the existing 48Mega Evolutions inPokemongames, just four out of 26 is a bit low for a game revolving mainly around this mechanic.
Mega Aggron was the only Pokemon to lose a type upon Mega Evolving, going from Steel/Rock to just Steel, and Mega Altaria is the only Dragon/Fairy Pokemon in the series so far.
Why Pokemon Legends: Z-A Players Are More Likely to Use Four Mega Evolutions Over Others
What follows is that, if the leaks are true, many players will inevitably gravitate toward Clefable, Meganium, Feraligatr, and Barbaracle more than other Mega Evolutions just to try something new. On top of that, someMega Evolutions' designs inPokemon Legends: Z-Aare not going to be extremely innovative from the base ones. The leaks mention that Starmie has two longer limbs as if they were legs, and the rest of the design is identical to the original critter, for example. It remains to be seen which Pokemon will be more popular once the game comes out, but these four Megas seem to be getting a bit more love than others.
