House of the Dragonseason 2 has now broken a long-runningGame of Thronesrecord after the 2025 Emmy nominations were announced, and it’s, unfortunately, not great news for the fantasy adaptation. The long-awaitedHouse of the Dragonseason two arrived in June last year and before anyone could say ‘Dracarys’, it was greenlit for a third and fourth season. Based on George R.R. Martin’s novelFire & Blood,House of the Dragonbegins around 100 years after the Seven Kingdoms are united by the Targaryen conquest, as the clan ascends into a huge civil war where families are broken apart by greed and betrayal.

Season three will follow on from the epic tale that theHouse of the Dragonseason 2 finaleleft off, but now, the stakes are even higher as the Targaryen dynasty will continue to reign, by fire and by blood. Fans will also get to finally meet the long-awaitedDaeron Targaryen, Aegon and Aemond’s brother when the show returns. The success of the show wasn’t a huge surprise to those who tuned into the incredibleGame of Thronesseries with its complex yet captivating narratives and characters, in turn making it one of the most popular shows ever. Even so, it seems as thoughHouse of the Dragonseason 2 hasn’t quite lived up to the success ofGame of Thronesat the Emmys, ending a lengthy streak for the franchise.

House of the Dragon Season 2 Ends Game of Thrones’ Emmy Nomination Streak

Marking a sad period for Westeros,House of the Dragonhasn’t been nominated for ‘Best Outstanding Drama’ at the 2025 Emmy Awards, ending a record thatGame of Throneshad held onto since Season 1.Game of Throneshas received 164 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including eight consecutive ‘Outstanding Drama Series’ nominations, with a total of 59 wins throughout its eight seasons. Not only didHouse of the Dragonseason 2 not get nominated for Outstanding Drama, but it also received zero nominations in the show’s acting, directing, and writing categories too.

Season 2 ofHouse of the Dragonseason 2 not receiving any nominations is certainly a dire and rather embarrassing situation for HBO, especially sinceseason 1 won a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama, while Emma D’Arcy earned a nomination for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama, as well as earning nine Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series. However, it’s not overly surprising either, as manyfans criticized season 2’s lackluster storylines and pacing issues, as well as a reduction of its budget to allow for only eight episodes late in the production process, as opposed to its previous 10 episodes.

Even though competition is ripe in the TV world with hordes of shows gunning for the number one spot, it’s a shame that the franchise’s long-running streak had to end now, especially when shows are being canceled left, right and center but here’s hoping thatHouse of the Dragonseason 3 will pick up the paceand set its sights for a different situation at the Emmys next year.

The 2025 Emmys will air live on September 14th on CBS and Paramount+
